Immediately I was struck by the King Cobra SZ irons’ sleek, low-profile design – probably the most mouth-watering first impression I’ve ever had at the ‘ feel and waggle’ stage. The slightly shortened and wider sole added to the effect, with a top line as thick and inviting as a chocolate biscuit. Initially testing them on a glorious Portuguese spring morning, the refraction of light from the shiny toe of every club was at times irritating but bearable.
I’m a low ball hitter and the maximum MOI (Moment of inertia) encouraged a straight, penetrating flight, despite the claims of a high ball launch with a tough of draw from the offset lie and low centre of gravity. But I can live with that – as I have been for over 40 years – and the combination of wide sole and urethane insert made them forgiving off the turf with less of a divot and delivered a delightful feel off the face that only bladed clubs in the hands of a pro can produce.
